Sowore Says Stolen Phone Was Traced Near Ekiti Governor’s Lodge, Calls for CCTV Release
ADO-EKITI, Nigeria — 1 November 2026: Activist Omoyele Sowore has alleged that a mobile phone taken from a member of his team during an incident in Ado-Ekiti on Friday, 30 October, was subsequently traced to an area he identified as the Ekiti Governor’s Lodge.
In a statement circulated online, Sowore said that one of the phones reportedly taken during the confrontation had been located through a phone-tracking application. He shared a map screenshot and called on the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services to make available CCTV recordings from Tawakalitu Restaurant, where the incident reportedly occurred.
MBTV has not independently verified the device’s location history, the identity of any person who may have possessed the phone, or any connection between the device and Ekiti State officials. A route shown on a navigation screenshot does not, by itself, establish who held a phone or that it was physically inside a particular building.
What Sowore alleges
Sowore said the phone was taken during an attack on him and members of his team in Ado-Ekiti. He alleged that its reported location raised further questions about the assault and urged investigators to release relevant security footage.
The screenshot circulating with the claim appears to depict a map route in Ado-Ekiti, with place names and an estimated journey time. It does not supply an independently authenticated device-location log, a precise verified destination, or evidence identifying a person responsible for the alleged theft.
Police investigation and official responses
The Ekiti State Police Command previously said it had arrested 11 suspects in connection with the confrontation involving Sowore. Police described the matter as under investigation, while Sowore and his supporters disputed parts of the official account.
The Ekiti State Government has denied involvement in the attack. That denial, and the fresh allegation concerning the phone, should be assessed against independently obtained evidence rather than treated as proof either of involvement or exoneration.
Questions for investigators
- Was a phone formally reported stolen, and can its ownership and identifying details be verified?
- What do authenticated location records show, including their accuracy and timestamps?
- Is there relevant CCTV footage from the restaurant and surrounding premises, and has it been preserved?
- What has the investigation established about the 11 people whose arrests were announced?
MBTV supports a transparent, evidence-led investigation. We will update this report when verifiable findings or further official responses become available.
