Sowore Attack in Ekiti: Police Arrest 11 Suspects as AAC Calls for Investigation
The Ekiti State Police Command says it has arrested 11 people after a confrontation involving activist and African Action Congress (AAC) figure Omoyele Sowore and members of his team in Ado-Ekiti. Accounts of what caused the incident—and allegations about those responsible—remain disputed.
ADO-EKITI, Nigeria — 1 November 2026. Police in Ekiti State have announced the arrest of 11 suspects in connection with an incident involving Omoyele Sowore and other people at Tawakalitu Restaurant in the Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti on Friday, 30 October.
According to a statement issued on Saturday, 31 October, by the command’s spokesperson, SP Sunday Abutu, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad arrested the suspects at about 10 p.m. on Friday in the Atikankan area of the state capital. The police said investigations were continuing to determine each person’s role and identify any other individuals involved.
What happened to Sowore?
Sowore alleged that he and members of his team were assaulted by thugs after activities in Ado-Ekiti. He shared images of himself and an aide receiving medical attention, and accused security operatives and people linked to the state government of involvement.
The Ekiti State Police Command initially described the episode as an altercation at a restaurant. The command disputed claims that Sowore had been kidnapped and said he had received treatment and been discharged from hospital. Sowore rejected the police’s characterisation of the incident.
Police announce 11 arrests
The police reported recovering items including walkie-talkies, mobile phones, passports and substances suspected to be illegal drugs. The seizure and arrests form part of an ongoing investigation; they do not establish guilt or prove who planned the alleged assault.
The command said officers were investigating the suspects’ individual roles, any connections between them and whether other persons were involved. At the time of this report, the arrests had been announced but the outcome of the investigation had not been established.
AAC allegations and state government response
The AAC called for an independent investigation into the attack and raised questions about the conduct of security agencies and state officials. Those allegations are not findings of fact. The Ekiti State Government has denied Sowore’s claims that it was behind the incident, according to reporting published on 1 November.
The differing accounts underscore the importance of preserving relevant evidence, including any available CCTV footage, witness testimony and medical records, and giving investigators space to establish what happened.
Questions that remain unanswered
- Who initiated the confrontation at the restaurant, and what does the evidence show?
- What roles, if any, did the 11 arrested individuals play?
- Can independent evidence substantiate or refute allegations of official involvement?
- Will investigators release a clear account of their findings and any charges?
MBTV will update this report if the police, Sowore, the AAC or the Ekiti State Government release materially new, verifiable information.
