SON Joins Export Supervision Committee to Strengthen Product Standards
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria has joined the Nigerian Export Supervision Scheme Technical Committee, a move intended to strengthen quality control for locally manufactured goods entering international markets.
SON said the membership gives it a formal role in coordinating product conformity with export supervision. The agency expects the arrangement to support closer cooperation among government bodies responsible for inspecting and certifying goods before shipment.
A key element is the planned integration of SON’s Export Certificate Programme into the National Single Window. If implemented effectively, that could reduce duplicated checks while making it easier for exporters and regulators to confirm that products meet safety, quality and technical requirements.
The Nigerian Export Supervision Scheme operates under the Pre-shipment Inspection of Exports Act. It provides for inspection of goods before export by approved agents. SON’s involvement should add standards expertise to that process, particularly for non-oil products.
The practical test will be whether the new arrangement shortens processing time, improves confidence in Nigerian goods and avoids creating another layer of bureaucracy for small exporters. SON said it remains committed to international compliance and improved market access for made-in-Nigeria products.
