Cardiff Mother, 40, and Unborn Baby Die in Nigeria as Family Seeks to Bring Them Home
A family in South Wales is mourning the deaths of Claire Chadwick, 40, and her unborn daughter in Nigeria, where Claire had been living with her husband. Relatives say they are working to bring them home to the UK for burial.
Claire, originally from Cardiff, was 37 weeks pregnant when the tragedy occurred. Reporting by Cardiff Daily, drawing on coverage by WalesOnline, says she experienced serious pregnancy-related medical complications. Other reports citing her family say her unborn daughter died in the womb and Claire subsequently developed sepsis and died from septic shock.
Family appeals for help with repatriation
Claire’s sister, Shannon Chadwick, established a fundraising appeal titled Bringing Claire home on 30 October. The appeal explains that international repatriation involves unexpected legal and administrative costs, and that the family wants Claire to be laid to rest in the UK with loved ones.
The family set a £10,000 target for repatriation and legal arrangements. By 5 November, the online fundraiser was displaying contributions above that target, although the total may continue to change.
Tributes to a mother with a strong personality
Claire had moved to Nigeria to live with her husband, Ibrahim. Reports say the couple shared aspects of their life, relationship and faith on social media. She also leaves behind a son living in Wales.
Her sister and friends have remembered her as a lively, independently minded person who brought laughter to those around her. The family has thanked people who have donated, offered condolences or shared the appeal.
What is known about the medical circumstances?
Published accounts attribute Claire’s death to sepsis and septic shock following the loss of her unborn child. However, the detailed medical records and precise sequence of clinical events have not been made public. MBTV has not independently established whether any medical error occurred, and no allegation of negligence is made in this report.
The UK Foreign Office has reportedly confirmed that it is providing support to the family of a British woman who died in Nigeria.
