The Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, has written a letter to the state House of Assembly, seeking the consent of the lawmakers to extend the tenure of the local government transition chairmen.
Abiodun disclosed that he was desirous of elongating the chairmen’s tenure by another three months after their initial tenure had lapsed on April 17, 2020.
The governor premised his request for the tenure extension on the COVID-19 pandemic, which he said had made the period inauspicious for conducting local government elections.
Abiodun, in a letter dated 13th April 2020, and sent to the state House of Assembly, explained that the extension became expedient to avert a vacuum in the local government administration in the state.
The governor’s letter, which was read by the Speaker of the house, Olakunle Oluomo, stated that the extension was sought because the local government councils election had not been scheduled due to prevailing circumstances.
The letter read, “As you may be aware, the tenure of the present local government transition committees expires on April 17, 2020.
“Considering the fact that local government elections have not been scheduled due to prevailing circumstances, it has become expedient to request the extension of the tenure of the transition committees to avert the creation of a vacuum in local government administration.”
Meanwhile, the speaker has directed all the local government transition committee chairmen to submit performance reports to the Assembly since they assumed office.
