Federal Government Cancels New NTI NCE and Degree Admissions for 2026
The Federal Government has cancelled new admissions into National Certificate in Education and degree programmes operated by the National Teachers’ Institute for the 2026 academic session.
The directive was announced by the Federal Ministry of Education in a statement dated 7 November. It applies to full-time, part-time and distance-learning admissions into the affected programmes. Prospective applicants were warned not to accept admission offers or make payments for them.
The ministry said the decision followed regulatory breaches and concerns about programme authority, affiliations and accreditation. It also directed the National Universities Commission to notify universities connected to NTI degree-awarding arrangements and ensure compliance.
Students already enrolled are not automatically removed. The National Commission for Colleges of Education is expected to review existing NCE II–IV distance-learning programmes and study centres across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Eligible students may be allowed to complete their studies, subject to accreditation findings and applicable rules.
The ministry said NTI should concentrate on teacher training, retraining, continuing professional development and an abridged professional programme for serving teachers who hold non-education degrees.
Students should obtain written confirmation directly from the institute and the relevant regulator before making further payments or changing their study plans.
