Sibusiso Moyo, Zimbabwean foreign minister, and former army general has died from COVID-19, the government announced on Wednesday. He was 61.

He “succumbed to COVID-19 at a local hospital” on Wednesday, Mnangagwa’s spokesman, George Charamba, said in a statement.

Moyo, who suffered from a kidney condition, reportedly died in a medical facility in the capital Harare, days after testing positive for the virus.

The 61-year-old gained prominence in 2017 as the military general who announced the coup against then-President Robert Mugabe on television.

Moyo is the third government minister to die of the coronavirus after the country’s Minister of Agriculture Perrance Shiri, and Ellen Gwaradzimba, who was the minister of provincial affairs for Manicaland Province, succumbed to the disease.

The country has seen a spike in COVID-19 infections and fatalities since the start of the new year, with the country recording 52 deaths and 783 new infections within 24 hours.

Zimbabwe currently has 28,675 COVID-19 cases to date, including 825 deaths.
