A former head of state, Yakubu Gowon, has begged God to forgive Nigeria over its national sins and the multifaceted problems confronting the country.

Gowon made the plea on Sunday, February 23, at an interdenominational service organized by Nigeria Prays, in the north-east zone, Guardian reports.

He said Nigerians need to overcome the bloodshed, kidnapping, terrorism, banditry, herder-farmer clashes and other challenges faced by the country.

The former head of state advised Nigerians to confess all sins committed against one another sin before God.

“Let us now bring before God, our Lord, our true confession and prayer for the repentance for our sins and transgressions on behalf of our nation, the leadership and the country,” Gowon said

“We (should) confess our shortcomings, our wrongdoings and all committed against one another, past and present. We (should) bring confession of needless bloodshed, killings and renewed attacks by the dreaded Boko Haram.”

Gowon who admitted that Nigeria is faced with a myriad of problems said prayers to God were needed for solutions to the problems.

In another report, Nigeria’s former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, has called for unity among Nigerians as the country navigates through its security challenges, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Legit.ng gathered that Obasanjo made the call in Abuja during the burial service of Jennifer Etuh, wife of the chairman, Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria (FEPSAN), Thomas Etuh.
