The two special constables working with the Oyo State police command who were dismissed after being caught on camera demanding money from a female Dutch biker who was touring African countries have blamed the Nigerian government for their predicament.
SaharaReporters had reported that the two constables who were caught in the viral video demanding a bribe from the tourist were subsequently arrested.
Hence, the duo were dismissed from the force and consequently stripped of the Nigerian police uniform to further confirm their exit from the constabulary.
The Oyo Commissioner of Police said their dismissal from police constables followed a recommendation of the orderly room investigation.
The CP said, “The two dismissed constabularies would not be prosecuted in court since they were not originally trained officers of the Nigerian police.”
However, in a viral video which was seen by SaharaReporters, the two dismissed officers claimed that they had never received any salary or remuneration from the government despite serving for over three years.
They went on to say that it was because of this that they ended up begging and demanding money from motorists and using whatever they received to support themselves and their families.
One of them said, “I served for three years and three months. They did not give us any salary. They never gave us anything. Even after the dismissal, we were not paid at all. It is when we go to the roadside that we get money from what people give us. This is what we share and use to feed ourselves, our children and our wives.
“The punishment given to us was not commensurate with our offence. We were joking with the Dutch woman. We thought she was one of the foreigners brought by Ibrahim Chatta (an actor).”
“We cried because we were stripped naked before they collected our uniforms,” one of them added.
