A professor at the Department of Religions, University of Ilorin, Professor Yahya Oyewole Imam, has said that insecurity may persist if the present administration fails to address the imbalance in the country.

Imam made this disclosure while speaking at the 28th Ramadan lecture organized by the University of Ibadan Muslim Community (UIMC) on Saturday.

The don who spoke on the topic, “Islamic response to the problem of insecurity in Nigeria”, insisted that Nigeria may continue to witness insecurity if the present administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari fails to address the imbalance in the areas of employment, infrastructural development, injustice and inequality among various groups in the country.

He added that the line of equity, justice, and unity in Nigeria would be a panacea to address insecurity challenges in the country.

“Insecurity will be addressed when Nigerians see themselves as one and indivisible. Communities should come out to address common problems such as insecurity and not indiscriminate blame or describing a particular ethnic group as perpetrators.

“Government at all levels must provide a conducive environment for investment to thrive and treat everybody with equity in respect of tribe, religion, ethnic or social status.

“It is when all these are strictly adhered to that those Islamic responses can meaningfully work and insecurity stamped out of Nigeria.”

Imam said that there is no part of the country that is not currently experiencing insecurity and that most of the roads in the country are no longer safe.

“Presently, there is no part of the country where one case of insecurity or the other is not being experienced and reported, if not daily, then every week. Nigerian roads, for instance, are no longer safe for fear of being kidnapped by bandits who wreak havoc on innocent Nigerians.

He called on governments to tackle other causes of insecurity such as porous borders, unemployment, corruption, bad roads, power, infrastructural development.

He said, “Punitive and deterrent punishments must be given to perpetrators of insecurity irrespective of their status when the charge has been proven beyond doubt against them.

“No investors will come to a country if there is no conducive and enabling environment for them to operate a business.

“Government alone can’t provide jobs to its population, the government needs investors for partnership.

“Government jobs should attract a living wage that must not only take the employee home but give them the essence of working, decent living promptly.”
