UK Reacts As Nigerian Govt Lifts Twitter Ban

The British Government has said the federal government’s decision to lift the ban on micro-blogging site, Twitter is a welcome development.

Recall that the Nigerian government lifted the ban after seven months.

The decision to lift the ban was confirmed by the Chairman, Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement & Director-General National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, on Wednesday.

In a statement in Abuja, Kashifu noted that the approval was given following a memo written to President Muhammadu Buhari by his Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Pantami.

Reacting, Catriona Laing, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, welcomed the decision, adding that social media plays a valuable role in boosting a free economy.

She tweeted, ”I welcome Nigeria’s decision to restore access to Twitter.

”Social media plays a valuable role in boosting a free economy and allowing the exchange of ideas – essential components of any open society.”
