The leader of Springs of Living Waters Ministries in Zimbabwe, Leeroy Simabyu has been arrested after an audio of him physically assaulting a female member of his congregation surfaced online.
The self-proclaimed Prophet is said to be renowned for his aggressive disciplinary tactics.
The situation escalated dramatically when Violet Ndhleleni (54) was assaulted by Prophet Shiri, allegedly for spreading false information about him.
Fortunately, Ndhleleni managed to record the incident, and the leaked audio recording ignited widespread public outrage.
In the widely circulated audio recording, Prophet Shiri was heard bragging about his disciplinary actions against other members of the congregation.
He is heard scolding Ndhleleni for her outspokenness and perceived disrespect, followed by the sound of multiple slaps that silenced her. Additionally, he issued threats of using his purported supernatural powers to curse those who oppose him.
Ndhleleni, along with two other victims, Peace Tapfumaneyi and Takudzwa Dube, who are members of the prophet’s security team, filed assault charges against the clergyman.
As a result, Prophet Shiri was arrested and appeared before Kwekwe magistrate Mildred Matuvi. He was granted bail of US$50. Prophet Shiri faces charges of assault and awaits further legal proceedings.
This incident has sparked intense debate within the community, with many condemning the prophet’s actions against congregants. Social media platforms are flooded with messages expressing concern and urging relevant authorities, including community leaders, to swiftly address the matter.
