Tragedy struck at Holy Ghost International Church, located at Ijo Mimo area of Akure, the Ondo State capital yesterday, when a loudspeaker fell on a 3-year- old baby and killed the baby on the spot.
The unfortunate incident which occurred at about 2 pm during the Sunday church service reportedly brought the service to an abrupt end, as there was pandemonium over the heartbreaking incident.
It was reported that the child was around a place where the loudspeaker was hung during the service.
The loudspeaker was said to have suddenly fallen on the child, which accidentally led to his death instantly.
Another eyewitness account narrated that the loudspeaker did not hit the child, but fell close to him, saying that the child died as a result of shock that came from the sound of the loudspeaker.
Some of the church members refused to speak to our correspondent while crying and wailing.
But a few of them who managed to utter some words said the loudspeaker had been there for long, wondering what caused it to fall, while some others attributed the cause of the incident to the handiwork of the devil.
As at the time of filing this report, the grave of the child was being dug at the church’s premises and his corpse about to be buried.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Femi Joseph, said if the parents of the child had decided not to report to the police, there was nothing the police could do.
The pastor of the church, according to information available, just resumed a month ago before this incident, as the former pastor was posted to Ibadan in Oyo State having served over 12 years.
