A 37-year-old man, Evans Kamau, has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his estranged wife to death in Kenya.

The suspect allegedly stabbed Esther Njigi Nyaga 17 times at her home in Everest Estate, Juja, Kiambu County on Sunday, August 8, 2021. She died while being rushed to Thika Level 5 hospital.

The couple separated in 2019 after nine years of marriage due to domestic fights. Since then, Esther, who worked as a nurse at Muruka Dispensary in Kandara, Murang’a County, had been living as a single mother raising their three kids.

Reports indicate that the suspect accessed Esther’s house from the back entrance on Sunday night and disconnected power from the main switch.

Evans is then said to have locked Esther in her bedroom where he allegedly committed the heinous act before he ran from the crime scene.

The deceased eldest child, a girl aged 11 sought help from the neighbor who helped in taking Esther to the hospital but she succumbed to her injuries.

The neighbor, Purity Gathoni, said that the child knocked on their gate and requested if she could help take her mother to a hospital.

Gathoni said she enquired what had happened, and the girl revealed that her father had allegedly stabbed their mother.

“We found her in her bedroom lying in a pool of blood. While being taken to hospital, Esther said that her estranged spouse, Evans Kamau, had stabbed her multiple times.” Gathoni said.

According to Juja Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO) Richard Mwaura, the court allowed police to hold the suspect as investigations continue.
