Internet users stand at 149.8 million, The Nigerian Communications Commission, (NCC) has disclosed.

It enjoined Nigerians to be vigilant and cyber security-conscious as Internet users keep increasing.

Its Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta said cybersecurity should be the responsibility of everyone considering the volume of online activities and transactions in the country.

Danbatta spoke during the 2020 National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM).

He said: “The increase in digital financial transactions for e-commence activities calls for greater responsibility on the part of individuals and corporate internet users to protect themselves against cybercrimes.”

A statement by the Director of Public Affairs of the Commission, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, quoted Danbatta as saying the need to be cyber security-conscious to guarantee online safety for Internet users is everyone’s business and not reserved for a group of people.

The NCC boss said more internet users are expected as services in different sectors of the economy are becoming digitalized.

Danbatta emphasized: “Security is not reserved for a group of people, it is truly everyone’s business; bringing competence and knowledge to help build a safer and more inclusive information society.”

Danbatta restated the commitment of the Commission to continually embark on policy initiatives to enhance online security as well as educate and equip the consumers of telecom services with information they need to be protected online.
