Residents of Omonira street, Igbokoda who witnessed the setting of a medicine store on fire allegedly by the naval officers in Igbokoda, on Thursday, have embarked on a peaceful protest to appeal to the government to intervene in the poor medicine seller’s matter. They said their appeal was not only to bring the perpetrators to book but also to compensate the woman in order to restore her medicine store.

Carrying placards of different inscriptions, like, “NO TO NAVAL OFFICERS OPPRESSION,” “A FAMILY LIVELIHOOD HAS BEEN DESTROYED BY NAVAL OFFICERS AT IGBOKODA,” “NO TO NAVAL MADNESS AT IGBOKODA…” amongst others, they were in different groups of less than ten each – in observing the social distancing on covid-19 orders. They appealed to Governor Akeredolu to wade in urgently.

It could be recalled that on the evening of Thursday at exactly 7:15pm, a group of security officers led by Igbokoda naval officers was alleged have set a medicine store belonging to Mrs Taiwo Omosehin on fire on the excuse that the shop was not closed on or before 7pm on the orders of the Governor of Ondo state’s imposed curfew of dusk till dawn(7pm-7am).

The residents of the area who said that they witnessed the arson, said that the security men got to the place at around 7:15pm and on seeing that the shop was still being opened, wetted the shop with the gallon of petrol one of them was carrying, and put fire immediately. They said they were helpless in putting off the fire because the officers were still around looking ferocious.

The people who said that the shop was the woman’s only means of livelihood, appealed to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and well meaning people to intervene into the woman’s plight for the sake of fairness especially when the woman had not contravened the order of the governor as what she was selling were among the ones the governor exempted in his curfew orders.
