The best-graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2021/2022 academic session, Aminat Yusuf, has talked about how she excelled in school.

In June, Yusuf became the first LASU undergraduate to get a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 5.0 in 40 years.

Speaking with BBC Pidgin, the law graduate said she usually read for 18 hours in a day while in school.

“If you want to get a first class, it is not by mouth. You must have passion for anything you are doing, especially when it comes to academics,” she said.

“This is because there will be moments when things will be really difficult. In those periods, you will be able to manage the situation since it is something that you are passionate about.

“I read 18 for hours everyday while in school. What I usually do then is to divide the subjects that I have enlisted for the day into three and dedicate six hours to each of them.”

Yusuf enjoined students aiming for academic excellence not to wait till exam is around the corner before they start reading.

She added that students need to be committed to their study and seek help from senior colleagues or lecturers when they find it difficult to understand what they are reading.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos state, earlier gave her the sum of N10 million at the 26th convocation and 40th anniversary of the institution.

Yusuf had also revealed that she was motivated to pursue a perfect CGPA as an undergraduate after getting a 4.98 CGPA during her direct entry (DE) programme at LASU.
