The people of five communities in Ondo State who were allegedly attacked by some suspected Fulani herdsmen on Wednesday appealed to the state government to rescue them from further attack by suspected armed herdsmen.

The suspected herdsmen allegedly attacked the people of no fewer than five communities in the Akure North Local Government Area of the state on Sunday.

The affected communities are Adejubu, Adewole, Olotin, Olondan and Apedu.

Some of the victims, who spoke to our correspondent, said the state government should evacuate the herdsmen from the communities.

The head of the Apedu Community, Chief Oro Adegoroye, lamented that the herdsmen had created fear in the minds of his people after the attack.

He said, “My people cannot go to the farm again, some of them have even fled the community for fear of being attacked by the herdsmen again. Since that day that the incident occurred, many have been sleeping in neighbouring communities.”

A victim of the attack, Mr Dennis Joseph of Apedu village, said his house was attacked by the bandits on the day, saying since then he and members of the family could not sleep in the village or go to the farm again.

He said, “On that day, they chased us out of our houses. We have to run to Imofon (a neighbouring town) where we slept till day break.

“We have not slept in the house since that day, because they may attack us again. We want the government to deploy security men here permanently because the herdsmen can come back to attack us.”

Elder Jacob Akinwumi of Adejubu village said since people had not gone to their farms, such might lead to hunger.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Alhaji Jimoh Dojumo, said the government had already stepped into the matter as the heads of the villages and other stakeholders had been invited.

He added, “The matter will surely be resolved.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Undie Adie, said, “When our men got there they did not see any destruction, there was no crisis in the area, it was a false alarm.”
