A student at the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), identified as Olaniyi Israel Adewale, is trying to set a 150-hour world record for the longest drumming marathon by an individual.

The computer science student commenced the 150-hour attempt on April 29 using the African talking drum.

He is expected to conclude the nearly seven-day quest on May 5.

The exercise is being held at FUOYE premises.

Adewale said he has been approved by the Guinness World Records (GWR) to run the attempt.

As of the time of this report, Adewale has surpassed 100 hours. The attempt is being aired across his social media platforms.

The drum-a-ton has featured the singing of songs by several Afrobeats singers including Mayorkun and Simi.

It also involves praising and celebrating celebrities including Mr Macaroni and Woliagba.

In a post via Instagram, Adewale appreciated the support of Ayo Ajewole, the Nigerian comedian, towards the quest.

“This is becoming real and overwhelming. I could not imagine that the challenge that started days ago is now close to 100 hours,” he wrote.

“And I sincerely want to appreciate Woliagba for the support he showed and the platform he gave me for recognition.

“My appreciation is it today but I just want to inform you he showed up tonight in our live video session.

“Let us drum up history, I’m still drumming.”

Adewale will join the growing list of Nigerians who have attempted to set new world records since the beginning of 2023.

In 2023, Hassan Joshua Bature, a computer science lecturer at the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), also attempted.

The lecturer revealed plans to undertake a 150-hour teaching marathon.
