Commotion As 10 Persons Are Killed By Stray Cows In Bauchi Community

As many as 10 people have been killed by cows in Soro town in Ganjuwa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

This came as a result of the cow market sited in the community.

Member representing Darazo/Ganjuwa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Honourable Mansur Manu Soro, made this known while briefing the state deputy governor, Senator Baba Tela and the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, North East Development Commission (NEDC), Dr Mohammad Goni Alkali, during an on the spot assessment of the relocation of the market to another site.

The lawmaker informed that those who lost their lives over the years were killed by stray cows during market days due to the siting of the cow market close to the residential area in the town.

According to him, the location of the market near residential area, posed a great danger to the lives of residents in the area.

The development, Manu Soro said, informed his decision to move a motion on the floor of the House of Representatives, requesting for the relocation of the market, adding that the request was forwarded to the NEDC for intervention.

He expressed happiness that the request was eventually granted and the commission was now constructing an international cattle market at Soro to check the trend of accidents caused as a result of strayed cows.

“We are worried by the loss of lives in the cattle market, so I moved a request on the floor of the House and my request was forwarded to the NEDC for intervention. I am very happy that today, the project is moving on well.

“Considering the size and volume of cattle that come in every market day, we decided to expand the market to conveniently accommodate 3,000 cattle at a time and make business transactions easier for the people,” Manu Soro said.

He further disclosed that when completed, the new cattle market would reduce congestion on the main highway as well as reduce the risk of people getting killed by vehicles on market days.

Speaking, the NEDC MD/CEO, Dr Alkali said that the Commission agreed to construct the international cattle market at Soro with a view to safeguarding the lives of the people of the town who had been victims of attack by strayed cows.

While expressing satisfaction with the quality of the work done so far on the new market, the NEDC boss assured that the project would be completed by the end of 2021 and inaugurated early 2022.

Alkali assured that the market would have all the necessary amenities, including electricity, water, public VIP toilets, among others, in order to ease of doing business in it.

According to him, part of the Commission’s mandate was to intervene in areas that would make life easier for people of the North-East zone.

“I have known about this market since my school years and I know how important it is to the people of the area. Based on the information we have, we decided to relocate the market to a safer and better place,” Alkali said.

On his part, the Deputy Governor, Senator Tela expressed happiness over the project and declared that it would not only decongest the town on market days but also save lives of innocent people of the town from being victims.

He, however, called for mobile banking on market days with a view to making business transactions in the market easier since the country has joined the cashless society.

Tela then commended the NEDC for accepting to construct the modern cattle market in Soro and its other interventions in the state since its establishment.
