Sunday Godwin, a journalist, was allegedly assaulted by persons suspected to be political thugs while covering the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District rerun in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State on Saturday.

Godwin, who works with Global Pilot, claimed that he was accosted by some unknown persons who challenged on why he was filming proceedings in the area.

The journalist said the suspected thugs had told him that he was not meant to be filming at the area considering that it was the polling unit of Godswill Akpabio, a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The police started dragging with other people to rescue the thugs, telling them that we are supposed to be beware of this unit, saying that this is Akpabio’s unit. So, we are not supposed to be part of it, we are not supposed to come there, that the unit belongs to Akpabio,” Godwin said in an interview.

He stated that the suspected thugs immediately pounced on him, injuring him in the process while his camera was destroyed.
