Shehu Sani, a former senator who represented Kaduna Central, has reacted to a controversial bill at the Senate that seeks to give concession to repentant Boko Haram terrorists.

The outspoken former lawmaker said that if signed into law, the agency that will be backed by such a bill will only breed more insurgents, especially in the north. Sani said insisted that with the establishment and operation of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), such a bill is not needed.

Earlier, GIOTV reported that the Nigerian Senate considered a bill seeking to establish an agency that would see to the rehabilitation, deradicalization, and integration of repentant insurgents in the country. The bill which was read for the first time on the floor of the upper chamber was sponsored by Senator Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe East senatorial district. The bill would be for insurgents who choose to the ceasefire. Back in 2019, a group of Borno elders, led by ex-governor Kashim Shettima, frowned at the military’s operation called Operation Safe Corridor in Malam-Sidi.
