A Ghanaian fan was arrested after assaulting the country’s coach Chris Hughton following their 2-1 shock defeat to Cape Verde in Sunday’s AFCON 2023 Group B game.

According to reports in Ghana, the unidentified man attacked Black Stars coach, Hughton at the team’s hotel, prompting the swift intervention of Ghanaian diplomats present at the scene, who managed to rescue Hughton before the said fan was handed over to the police.

The motive behind the attack might be connected to the Black Stars’ loss to Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire police said.

Ghana face a crucial match against Egypt on Thursday, a match that will end their campaign if they are defeated.
Meanwhile,  Egypt had to rely on a 97th-minute penalty from Mohamed Salah to rescue a point against Mozambique.
