Hon. Alexander Ikwegh, a federal lawmaker representing Aba North and South Constituency in Abia State, has been arrested by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command for allegedly assaulting a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, during a dispute over a package delivery at Ikwegh’s residence.

In a statement released by FCT Police Command spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh, the incident occurred on Sunday when Abuwatseya delivered a package to Ikwegh’s Abuja home. According to police, a dispute erupted concerning the method of delivery, leading to the alleged assault. Ikwegh reportedly slapped Abuwatseya and dismissed the authority of the Inspector General of Police, allegedly stating, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police.”

The police expressed concern over Ikwegh’s attitude toward law enforcement, and Ikwegh is currently being questioned at the Maitama Police Station. Preliminary investigations reveal that during the altercation, Ikwegh allegedly insulted the driver, saying, “You are a common bolt driver, you are a poor man and you have pride,” before physically assaulting him.

In a further twist, Abuwatseya was reportedly detained after the incident, with police officers allegedly accusing him of “going to fight a senator.” Though the driver has been released, his car remains in police custody, and he was initially denied access to calls while in detention.

The FCT Police Command emphasized that the investigation into the incident is ongoing, as they address growing concerns over abuse of power and respect for law enforcement authority.
