Food Crisis: UN Warns Afghanistan

The Taliban have not formed a new government despite seizing power, international recognition and acceptance remain in question and foreign aid is yet to resume in Afghanistan.

GIOTV reports that the United Nations has sent warnings to Afghanistan, says it could face a food crisis in a months’ time, with at least one out of three people going hungry as the country’s Taliban rulers are still planning to form a new government to steer the affairs of the country.

“The situation in Afghanistan from a humanitarian perspective continues to be extremely tense,” Ramiz Alakbarov, UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Afghanistan, said on Wednesday, stressing that nearly half of the children in Afghan are struggling to find the next meal already.

This platform has learned that in the past few days, the price of food in Afghanistan has experienced inflation by about 50 percent, while the price of petrol has increased as much as 75 percent. This is a very sad reality following the departure of US forces and the surrendering of the Afghan military to the Taliban which made it easier for the extremist group to sweep the country, taking over without much resistance. Now the fate of millions of Afghans hangs in the air as uncertainty beclouds their country’s future.

With a lack of international aid and the majority being disconnected from the country, Alakbarov indicated that government services cannot function effectively; with public employees unable to receive their salaries.
The group is yet to form a new government, rather they were seen on Wednesday parading in Kandahar some of the military hardware, including Humvees and armored fighting vehicles they captured during their takeover of Afghanistan. The plan for governance and stabilizing the country remains uncertain.

However, a Qatar Airways flight has landed in Kabul with a team that would assist in getting the airport function again as a lifeline for aid.
